SOS needs volunteers next week Volunteers are needed on the morning of July 14 for the fourth annual harvest of water chestnut plants, an invasive species threatening local waters. Volunteers will meet at the Sodus Bay Yacht Club at 9 a.m. for instruction and to team up with other harvesters. Volunteers may come by land or by water. Small boats are needed and welcome to help with the harvest. The area to be focused on this year is the mouth of Second Creek. The morning will end at 11 with a lunch for volunteers, compliments of SOS (Save Our Sodus). The water chestnut is not native to our area. It crowds out native plants and forms a mat of vegetation that can hinder recreational activities on Sodus Bay. In addition, the water chestnut forms a seed pod that is thorny and painful if someone happens to step on it. Volunteers will learn what the water chestnut looks like and how to pull out, and dispose of, the whole plant, including its spiny thorn. This activity is suitable for older children and adults. Please volunteer July 14 to help Save Our Sodus. Have questions or want to sign up? Call Linda Edinger. Phone: 483.6337
