The word 'barbecue' (barbeque, Bar-B-Q, B-B-Q) comes from the cooking method by Indians in the Caribbean, called 'barbacoa' by early Spanish explorers. Over time, the word came to mean the method of preparation, and often the event where it is served.

July 5, 1945 - Boos and jeers broke up a public meeting at Marion last Friday to discuss the future of the Branch Prisoner of War Labor Camp being erected here.

Even though we didn't get enough sign-ups for a Legion baseball team this year, we have a #8 cookbook ready for sale. Our boys are playing this year with the Williamson team, so there is still a budget to be considered. Cookbooks are still $2.00 each.

It took scientists until 1970 to figure out what has been folk knowledge for centuries - that cucumbers really are cool. In fact, on a warm day, the inside of a field of cucumber registers about 20 degrees lower than the air around it. How cool is that?

The Hen House Country Store in Williamson will have its 9th Annual Anniversary Open House today and tomorrow, July 6 & 7, from 10-5.
