Another mural in Lyons
Corky Goss

Come and see the front of Dobbins Drugs turn into an early 20 century pharmacy. CNY regional muralist, Corky Goss (pictured here at work yesterday) and Chip Miller of Art in Public Places are painting a mural on the front of Dobbins Drugs on William Street in Lyons.

Muralists Goss and Miller have been commissioned to transform the facade of Dobbins, a drug store in downtown for three generations. The mural application will bring back the past by recreating the grand architecture of the building, created as a 19th century opera house. Ornate 'faux' brick and limestone will adorn the building, including false windows looking into an old pharmacy, and past generations.

Art In Public Places has created murals all over the CNY region for nearly twenty five years. Miller and Goss, both MFA graduates of Syracuse University, are also area art teachers. Mark De Cracker, President of the Lyons Chamber of Commerce, introduced the pair to Dr. Sean Dobbins, a third-generation pharmacist at the store.

What is Mural Mania? The name says it all. It is the brainchild of De Cracker, who is using murals to spearhead a region-wide tourism and beautification effort, with emphasis on the history of the Erie Canal, education, and art. On these murals are scenes of what life used to be like in Lyons, once a thriving canal town.

Goss said Tuesday, that he will be back at work Saturday during Peppermint Days to paint in the 'pharmacy's' peppermint bottles.
