New Eagle Scout in Newark

Kevin Shanley, 16, of the Newark Boy Scout Troop #138 was presented his Eagle Scout rank on April 29. A special award ceremony was held at the Park Presbyterian Church, which charters the Troop.

His brother, Eagle Scout Jonathan Shanley, conducted the ceremony; he is pictured in back, with their father, Owen. Mom Debbie is pictured left.

Several of the Troop members also participated in the celebration. Kevin presented his parents, Debbie and Owen Shanley, with Eagle Scout parent pins. Kevin gave Scoutmaster Bob Hegeman with the special 'mentor pin' for his many years of guidance and help along the Eagle Trail.\

Kevin Shanley completed his required merit badges and Eagle project in May 2006. He planned and organized a landscaping project for one of the Wayne ARC residential group homes in Newark. With the help of Troop members, family and friends they beautified the grounds around this home for those that live there and work there. He requested and received donations of bushes, plants and flowers from 14 area greenhouses. The new Eagle Scout received expert help and advice from the Spring Valley Greenhouse in Walworth.

He has been active in scouting for 10 years. He started as a Tiger Cub in first grade with the hope of becoming an Eagle Scout some day. He is a member of Venture Crew 138 and the Fairville Fire Dept. Explorer Post 751. Future plans are to attend college to study Computer Technology.
