Fun-in-the-Sun at the beach

Sodus Point Park hosted the 10th annual Fun-in-the-Sun youth program. Nearly 400 youth from various Wayne County Recreation Centers participated in this event that spanned over three days in early July.

The 2007 theme was Maize Daze and featured Macedon's Long Acres, home of the Amazing Maize Maze.

This healthy living event also included a nutrition workshop from Cornell Cooperative Extension, arts and crafts from the Girl Scouts, a group activity The

Amazing Corn Race by Cornell Cooperative Extension and Council on Alcoholism and beach games led by Sodus Point's lifeguards.

Ideas reinforced by this program include, healthy food choices, exercise through team games and learning how corn plays an important part in our society. Some surprising things youth learned at this program is that corn can be found in over 3,000 products ranging from toothpaste and sunscreen to shoe laces and birthday candles.

Both the children and the adult chaperones were very enthusiastic about their newly acquired knowledge about corn!

This program reflects the impact our community can have on young people. Local organizations and agencies combined powers to create a fun, educational and healthy program.

With much of our program running from the generous donations received from Motts, Heluva Good Cheese, Wegmans and more, as well as the hard work put forward by volunteers, Wayne County youth enjoyed a great day at Sodus Point Park.

The generosity of our community organization has enabled healthy living programs such as Fun-in-the-Sun to continue and thrive. Fun-in-the-Sun is sponsored by Wayne County Department of Aging and Youth and NYS Office of Children and Family Services.
