Newark swim camps The Newark swim coaches are running a competitive swim camp July 30 to August 3. The camp is associated with the Newark Wahoos Swim Club, an age-group swimming program designed to teach and develop competitive swimming skills. It is NOT a learn-to-swim program. The camp is open to all swimmers, including beginning competitive swimmers who can pass a two-length test. The test is to swim two lengths (50 yards) of the pool, showing basic front and back crawl, to the satisfaction of the coaches. There are two levels of the camp. For experienced competitive swimmers (varsity, modified and experience club levels), the camp will be from 8 a.m. to 12:30 and will include stroke and skill work; conditioning; strength training; and daily presentations on topics such as dry land conditioning, mental preparation, and goal setting. Fees for the Experienced Group will be $85 for the week. For the beginning and novice swimmers, the camp will be from 9:30-11:30. The focus for this group would be beginning stroke and skill instruction; dry- land stretching; and daily presentations on goal setting, making swimming fun, and videotape instruction on strokes and skills. Fees for the Novice/Beginning Group will be $55 for the week. The Deep End Swim Store from Rochester will be at camp Monday, July 30 from 8 to noon to sell goggles, suits, caps, t-shirts, etc.... Swimmers should plan on purchasing their swimming gear for the camp or the upcoming swim season. Nick Santino, former Newark and Pal-Mac coach and the coach of state champion Holly Williams, will be guest coach on Tuesday. Cesar Nava, an athletic trainer from Brownstone Physical Therapy will also be giving a talk during the week on dry-land conditioning. Final registration for those swimmers who have not pre-registered will be at 7:30 on July 30 at the high school pool. For info call Coach DeWitt at 331.1684 or Coach VanDuyne at 331.6142.
