Birthday party for Newark-Wayne Hospital

Newark-Wayne Community Hospital and DeMay Living Center will be hosting a FREE community event, 'Spring Fest: Get Healthy. Be Well.' on June 2 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. on the grounds of the hospital (Driving Park Avenue in Newark).

This event will also be a Birthday Celebration of Newark-Wayne Community Hospital's 50 years of providing care to people in Wayne and the surrounding counties. Newark-Wayne opened on April 1, 1957.

Two other community partners, Newark Wegmans and WACK Radio will also be celebrating their 50th Anniversaries at Spring Fest.

A highlight of the event will feature a group photo at 11:30 a.m. of individuals who received care or who were involved in the opening of the hospital. Those individuals are invited to send stories about the hospital's opening to 50thstories@viahealth.org or call the Public Relations Office at 332.2492.

The event will be held in large tents, will feature: a bike helmet fitting and give-away (limited quantities and sizes) for children (ages 2-12); a bike rodeo for kids; drawings for FREE bicycles; a car seat safety check; FREE cholesterol screens and blood pressures; a race car by Dr. Fred Kaempffe; a ROAR women's professional football player clinic; FREE refreshments; visits from emergency medical service providers including Mercy Flight Central; hospital department and Wayne County organizations displays; fifties music and much more.

Also, the Emergency Department will be sponsoring a Teddy Bear Clinic and children are invited to bring a teddy bear or one of their other special stuffed friends for emergency care. Community partners include: Newark Wegmans, WACK Radio, Lincoln School PTA, Newark Kiwanis, Newark Police Department, Wayne County Public Health and Cadbury-Schweppes.

* 500 bike helmets to be given away total - limited quantities and sizes

* Cholesterol screens will be offered on a 'first come, first serve' basis. 12-hour fasting from food is suggested. Diabetics should follow their physician's orders.
