Missing Sodus

geese The weather has finally straightened out, even though a few days it was a tad too hot for May. It is nice to go outside and sit to enjoy the weather. I planted strawberries and have little ones coming along already. I also planted pumpkins in big pots with the bushes. I had put a small pumpkin by the bushes in the fall where it sat for the whole winter and, would you believe? I have pumpkins coming from that, too! I have not seen any cute little bunnies or squirrels living here with us so maybe these have a chance. I have four pots of surprise tomatoes all small varieties, I am pretty sure. At work, you throw out the tomatoes that do not have tags so, I saved them from the garbage can and planted them. Now, peppers are a completely different story. You do not want a surprise pepper.

Do you have any extra bedding plants? Tuck them into fun containers such as brightly colored children's pails. Be sure to drill a hole in the bottom to allow good drainage.

To have happy flowers, be sure to read the labels as to where they want to be planted.

Fun from the Sodus Free Library:

Hundreds of people - students, teachers, administrators, parents (and librarians!) - experienced an amazing day when author Jerdine Nolen captivated her audiences, charming us with her stories and encouraging us with her urging to 'hold onto your dreams, as you would your balloons.' Be sure to read her award-winning book, Harvey Potter's Balloon Farm, for more on that.

Thanks to all who made this author visit possible, especially Sodus Central School Librarians Becky Olson and Jennifer VanKouwenberg and their administrators, and the Friends of the Sodus Free Library. The Intermediate School's Homework Club even crafted a Plantzilla for the occasion!

At the evening session's reception, our Friends served punch and cookies, and sold several books, which Jerdine graciously signed for everyone.

Janet Lesschorn was on the Early news 8 program demonstrating how to make her Guamanian chicken . She was chosen out of five people to come on the show. Click here for the recipe.

News from Ralph and Betty Everdyke, who are now back in Newark.

Hello Everyone: Just wanting to report that we have landed back in the good warm state of New York. Will probably go back to Florida because it is too warm here. We had a had a good trip up. No snow, rain for fog. The only problem we had was coming up Route 301. Just as we got north of Citra all of a once the traffic stopped and we sat there for 30 or 45 minutes without moving. Finally they closed the south bound lane and let up cross over the medium and go. When we got to the place that was blocked, we found a trailer loaded with cars that had collided with an RV. the RV was in pretty bad shape and the trailer didn't look too bad. In the mean time we had seen two medical vans leave the site and I guess they were loaded with injured people. The rest of the trip was OK. The traffic wasn't too bad and the weather was great. I have spent the day getting the car unloaded and buying some things to have for dinner and breakfast tomorrow.

The kids are all crossing off the days on the calendars for their 'Countdown to Summer Vacation!' It is almost here for them. Try to keep them busy by making up a schedule. There are some nice workbooks to keep their brains from going to mush while they are out of school. Have some good summer books picked out for them to read when they are having down time, and a structured day so they are not just hanging out on in front of the tv set. The libraries will soon have their reading programs. Maybe plan a morning or evening walk with the kids or have a 'first aid' kit for being creative equipped with new crayons, construction paper, glue sticks, markers and a lot of ideas.

Summer is always fun but it will be more fun if you are prepared. Also, a 'field trip' once or twice a week is nice. Go to the park, the beach, the libraries or even out to lunch.

Enjoy your weekend with your families.
