A special group was in the Fashion Show at Clifton Springs Festival on Saturday, June 2. Dressed in their authentic Dutch costumes were Barbara DeWandel, Carolyn and Gordon Adriaansen, and Sue Devlin. There are seven Provinces in the country of the Netherlands, often called Holland. Representing the Province of Noord Holland is Barbara DeWandel in the fishing village of Volendam costume, of a candy striped print skirt with a blue blouse and apron. A pointed hat usually set this costume apart. This beautiful costume comes from the northern Friesland province. The solid color dress features a fitted bodice with a peplum and a white lace shawl with a top hat of lovely lace tightly shirred in the neckline. Beneath the lace hat is a gold hat, which years ago was a thin real gold helmet. This was the costume of well-to-do city ladies and wealthy farmer's wives. Represented by Carolyn Adriaansen. From Gelderland, the central section of the Netherlands is the Ochterhoek costume. The rich looking black brocade vest is worn over a blue-striped shirt and accented by a red scarf. Worn by Gordon Adriaansen. From Beveland, in the Province of Zeeland, is this costume with its beautiful large, stiffly starched hat. The 'Kissers' are large gold squares worn at the temples. Stories abound about these ornaments attracting the boys to the girls - or keeping them away, which never works. The Dutch wore these as jewelry. And if a family was of some means, they often wore bangles hanging from the ornaments. This elegant costume is worn by Susan Devlin. June 8, 1944: At J.C.
