Lecture series in Lyons

In the next session of Lyons Civic Club's spring literary series, The Lamps Went Out in Europe: World War One-That Seminal Catastrophe, lecturer/researcher Victor Harris will continue his examination of World War I, the 4-year struggle that consumed the globe and claimed millions of lives, by reviewing One Mans Initiation: 1917.

The June 12 lecture begins at noon, at the Lyons Community Center, on 9 Manhattan Street Extension.

One Mans Initiation: 1917 is a novel based on the author's experiences as an ambulance driver in France during World War I. The piece portrays the fear, uncertainty, and camaraderie of war. The author's disillusionment with war, for a time, turned him toward socialism and against capitalism. Finally, after being labeled pro-German and pacifist, Dos Passos concluded that the quasi-religion of Marxism was far more brutal than poor old Capitalism ever dreamed of.

The series, sponsored by the Robert G. Boehmler Community, is free and open to the public. Registration is required. For more information or to register, call Sharon at 946.3367.
