Wegmans will award scholarships

More than 1270 people who work at Wegmans Food Markets will receive scholarships to help with college tuition costs.

The company will pay out a total of $4.6 million for the 2007/2008 academic year to the new recipients and to previous scholarship recipients who are still in school.

Part-time employees receive up to $1500 a year for four years. Full-time employees receive up to $2200 a year for four years.

To be eligible, employees must work a minimum number of hours over a specified time period, while also maintaining a high academic standard and good work record.

Scholarship winners who work at the Newark Wegmans are Lauren Cummings, Danielle DeLyser, Kristen Hough, Mohamed Kenneh, Lassana Kenneh, Brandi Palermo, Jamie Prinzi, Laura Sieminski, Emily Strub, Sarah Szachta and Meghan Whitbeck.

Scholarship winners can choose any educational path they wish. When they graduate, they may enter any field they desire. Many do decide to stay with Wegmans after college, however, and pursue careers within the company. Of Wegmans' 70 current store managers, 21 are previous scholarship recipients.

Since 1984, the Wegmans Employee Scholarship Program has awarded over $63 million in tuition assistance to help more than 20,000 employees go to college.

An outside committee of college admissions professionals and a team from Wegmans reviews applications to select those who receive scholarships. The external committee evaluates such things as SAT scores, grades, and extracurricular activities; the internal Wegmans committee evaluates work performance.
