Second graders do good deeds with pennies For years now, Stephanie Joyce's second graders at Lincoln School in Newark have earned a penny whenever they do a good deed. Every time something nice is done unexpectedly, a child gets the chance to reach into the wishing well and take out a penny. But instead of keeping it, they put it in the penny pig and make a wish for something good to be done for someone less fortunate. This fruit of this altruistic practice is that lots of pennies get put in the pig and eventually the pig gets full and the pennies need another place to go. Twice during the year, the pennies are donated to a charitable cause of the class's choosing. These children donated pennies in January toward the Pennies for Patients drive at the school that helps people with leukemia. Recently, they donated their pennies, with money added by Joyce to make a $50 donation to the Victim Resource Center in Newark. On June 12, during the Walking Trip, the class went to the Center and gave the money to VRC Program Development Director Robin Canne. Copyright
