Hat exhibit at County museum

The coming exhibit at the Museum of Wayne County History will be 'Spring into Fashion: The History of Hats.' The history of the hat is long and varied. History has always had an influence on hat styles and hats reflect the spirit of the times. By the Victorian period, a proper lady always wore a hat or bonnet in public. Hats or head coverings can be a visible sign of ones wealth, political beliefs, occupation or religion. Historically, they have also been a shroud of submission and continue to be so in many countries even today.

The featured hats and information span from 1770 to 1950. Many of the hats were taken from the museum's private collection and others are on loan from museum members.

'One of the exciting parts of the exhibit is the loan of Mildred Taylor hats,' said Collections Committee member Pat Fisher.

Former Lyons resident, Taylor was an Assemblywoman from 1946 -1960 and was the first woman to be named to that body's Ways and Means Committee.

Wayne County Historical Society Vice President and chairperson of the Collections Committee, Kathi Marshall, said that viewers will be pleased with the varied collection. 'We have such an extensive hat collection and we thought spring would be such a lovely time to showcase it,' said Marshall.

Dixie Prittie, Nancy Bache, Doug Topping, Bev Marvin, and Joanne Burger also helped bring the exhibit to life.

The exhibit opens in the Museum's downstairs changing-exhibit room Tuesday March 13 and runs through the end of June.
