Victory for Newark girls!

The Newark girls basketball team (24-0) won the Class A Section 5 title last night at the Blue Cross Arena 70-66 win over the School of the Arts.

Newark trailed 20-16 after one period. The Reds outscored the Silverhawks 18-10 in the second period and led 34-30 at halftime.

Marissa Bunce scored 10 of her game-high 22 points in the first half. She went 5 for 10 from the three-point arc.

Newark led 54-45 going into the fourth period.

10th grader Alyssa Fenyn was named the Tournament Most Valuable Player; Shakista Woolfolk (pictured) and Bunce were named to the All Tournament Team.

Fenyn finished the night with 19 points with Woolfolk adding 17, along with seven rebounds and six assists.

Senior Jackie Loson scored eight, Kristin MacBride, Heather Virts and Jennifer Monaco were great on defense.

Newark plays at the Erie Community College (Buffalo) on Saturday in a 2 p.m. qualifier game.

Coach Diane Kirnie has been named the Class A Section 5 Coach of the Year.
