Sodus food drive starts today

March 12, 2007 is the 95th anniversary of Girl Scouting in the United States.

During Girl Scout Week, March 11-17, Girl Scouts across the country will take part in community service activities and good deeds of their choosing. The Sodus/Sodus Point Girl Scouts will be conducting a food drive to benefit The Backpack Buddies Program.

When there are long breaks away from school, this program provides lunches for Sodus Elementary children who may not otherwise get a nutritious lunch at home. The school day before the break, students receive backpacks full of non-perishable, kid-friendly foods items. After the break, the children bring the empty backpacks back to school.

Today, on March 10, the Sodus scouts will be distributing blue door hangers to area homes announcing the food drive. On March 17, the Girl Scouts will come back to pick up the donations. If you don't get a blue door hanger & would like to contribute, there will be a booth at Paton's Marketplace on March 17 from 10 to 1.

Suggested food items are: peanut butter & jelly in plastic jars, granola bars, microwaveable pasta/soup/stew bowls, fruit cups, and individually wrapped snacks, cookies, or chips.
