Managing your forest land Would you like to create better wildlife habitat in your woodlot? Perhaps you are considering logging your woods for additional income? Whatever project you envision for your woods, you should proceed carefully to avoid making costly mistakes. A good place to start is to arrange a visit by a volunteer Master Forest Owner from Cornell Cooperative Extension. A Master Forest Owner (MFO) has received training about tree identification, wildlife management, the timber industry, and other forestry topics. They help fellow forest owners find the agencies and professionals best suited to accomplish such tasks as timber harvests, creating wildlife habitat, planting trees, and handling forest related finances. An MFO volunteer will spend two or three hours walking your property with you and listening to your ideas and questions. They will then help you find accurate answers and good advice.
