Newark girls are Western Conference Champs

The Newark girls basketball team is ranked Number One in the State Class A polls after knocking off Kenmore East 63-38 at Erie Community College.

The Lady Reds play Friday (1:30 p.m.) in the Final Four of the NYS Class A championships.

Coach Diane Kirnie's team owns a 25-0 record and plays Malone, representing Section 10. Malone upset number top-ranked Christian Brothers Academy of Syracuse 55-51.

In the contest with Kenmore East, the Reds caught fire thanks to a pair of three-point jumpers by Marissa Bunce. Alyssa Fenyn scored 28 points and Shakista Woolfolk scored 14. The winner of the Newark-Malone game will play Saturday at Hudson Valley Community College.
