Diabetes event at Newark hospital

The Wayne County Diabetes Coalition is sponsoring a free Diabetes Awareness Event on Thursday, March 22 in the lobby of Newark-Wayne Community Hospital from 8 a.m. until noon. The event is being held to give Wayne County residents the opportunity to learn more about diabetes and how lifestyle changes can prevent the onset of diabetes and delay its serious side effects including blindness, heart disease, loss of limbs and other major medical complications. Wayne County's mortality rate from diabetes and its complications is among the highest in New York State.

Diabetes affects about 7% of the total population in Wayne County, between 600-700 people. Some segments of the population are more affected than others: for example, overweight people living sedentary lives; people over 60 years of age; people with a family history of diabetes; and, certain population groups such as Native Americans, Latinos and African Americans are all affected at a higher rate.

This annual event will feature:

  • Information on diabetes and its side effects
  • A risk assessment to learn your risk for developing diabetes
  • Free take-away nutritional information
  • Free blood glucose testing sponsored by the lab at Newark-Wayne Community Hospital
  • Information on support groups starting in several communities in Wayne County
  • A raffle for two $25 gas cards, donated for this event by the Wayne County Cancer Screening Coalition.

Wayne County Diabetes Coalition is a collaboration that includes the Wayne County Rural Health Network, Cornell Cooperative Extension, Newark-Wayne Community Hospital, DeMay Living Center, Wayne County Public Health and The Monroe Plan.

For more information, call Antje Dirksen-Post at 483.3225 or Sharon Morano at 331.8415. Anyone whose life has been touched by diabetes is welcome to attend and learn more about the disease and how to manage it.

Fasting from food for 12 hours prior is recommended.
