Kathryn Wegman New Marion super appointed
By Beth Hoad

Marion School District has appointed Kathryn Wegman as Superintendent effective July 1.

She will replace Dr. J. Richard Boyes, who is retiring at the end of June.

Wegman began working with the Marion District in 1995 as a BOCES consultant, where she split her time between Marion and Dundee helping the districts with curriculum and staff development. In 2001 she was hired as the Assistant Superintendent at Marion with responsibility for curriculum and professional development, non-instructional operations, technology, district safety and wellness activities, and district data administrator.

'We are pleased that Kathryn has agreed to be Superintendent at Marion,' said Sharon Varalli, school board president. 'She has played a pivotal role in advancing the goals of the district and will provide the continuity we need to keep things moving in a positive direction.'

Wegman started as an Instructional Resources Supervisor at Wayne-Finger Lakes BOCES in 1989. She worked with the 25 component school districts in a variety of school improvement activities including; individual, team and organizational development including; curriculum development, assessment training, interpersonal skill development, leadership and BOE development, Reading Recovery, Health and Wellness.

Wegman has a CAS in Educational Administration from SUNY Brockport, MA in Special Education and a BA in Elementary/Special Education. She is an officer and board member for the New York State Staff Development Council and President of the Board of Directors for Ontario ARC. She has also presented at National and International Conferences on Leadership Portfolios and Health Education.

Varalli said: 'Wegman's appointment follows the successful tenure of Dr. J. Richard Boyes, who has been with MCS for over 30 years. He has been the backbone of the district. He leaves a rich legacy of sustaining people's faith in each other and the conviction that by working together we would make Marion the best place to be a student, staff member, and community resident, said Varalli. I believe he did that. He will be greatly missed. Boyes joined MCS in 1976 as director of curriculum.'

In 1978 he became elementary school principal and in 1984 was appointed Assistant Superintendent. Upon the departure of then Superintendent Don Conning, Boyes was appointed to the role in 2001.
