Lyons scouts deliver yarn

A reception was held recently at the Wayne County Action Program main office in honor of the Lyons Girl Scout Troop #215.

The festivities began after over 100 boxes of yarn were delivered and unloaded by the girl scouts. Cookies and punch were served and soft, cuddly teddy bears were presented to the girls as a thank you gift. Guests included 10 girl scouts, several RSVP volunteer knitters, Senior Services staff, and community members who graciously volunteered to help drive this precious cargo to and from its destination.

What started out as a project to earn their bronze award ended up being a large undertaking for these girls. After reading an article asking for donations of yarn for the Retired and Senior Volunteer Program, the girl scouts decided to find out more about how they could help. Over the next few months, the girl scouts set up drop boxes in stores and yarn shops in many communities in Wayne County asking for donations.

Laurie Long (Girl Scout Troop leader) called RSVP and asked if the agency would be interested in receiving a large donation of yarn anonymously. The scouts loaded and unloaded every box of yarn, laughing and having a good time working hard.

From this tremendous donation, bundles of yarn have been and will continue to be distributed to RSVP volunteers, who in turn, will make baby blankets, lap robes, hats, scarves, and many other handmade items. Throughout the year, these items will be donated to area nursing homes, hospitals, dialysis centers, pre-school and Head Start programs, and many others in need.

This special day of giving was made possible through the dedication and hard work of the Lyons Girl Scouts, their leader, many generous community donations, and the RSVP volunteers.
