Newark village tax rate down
By John Zornow

With the start of a new budget year fast approaching, Mayor Peter Blandino revealed preliminary budget figures that show the Newark village tax rate dropping from $13.18 per thousand of assessed valuation to $10.76 per thousand.

The 2007 town wide reassessment must be taken into consideration when determining the effect of the rate on each individual property owner's tax bill.

Spending is up by $55,000. The new tax levy is $3.27 million, up from $3.12 million, an increase of 5%, or $156,000.

'Much of the increase was as a result of DPW union wage increases, the balance is an effort to keep our reserves at a reasonable level,' indicated Blandino, who added that there will be no increases in water or sewer rates in the 2008 fiscal year, which begins June 1.

The budget will be offered up for public comment at a public hearing on Tuesday, April 3, 7:05 p.m. The organizational meeting will also be held at that time.

The board will be asked to approve the 2007-2008 budget at the meeting on April 17.

One appointment that is planned is the promotion of heavy equipment operators Doug Townsend and Jeff DeCann, to be named hourly working foremen for the Department of Public Works.

In comparison: Village Clyde tax rate for 2007-08 is $18.95 per thousand, Lyons, $19.74 per thousand, Wolcott, $10.34, Palmyra, $12.70, Sodus Point, $4.86, and Macedon, $5.06.
