Alyssa FenynVarsity girls dream ends

The Newark Reds Varsity girls dream of a state title fell short as Malone High School of Section ten edged the Lady Reds 56-54 in the semi-finals of the Class New York State Championships.

The previously undefeated Reds lost in the closing seconds as Haley Poupore scored with seconds left on a lay up, pulling ahead by two. Newark had one last chance, but Franklin denied point guard Alyssa Fenyn a shot after she raced upcourt. She passed to the wing and Jen Monaco's 3-pointer was blocked as time expired.

"Last year when we lost in the semis of sectionals we built on that,'' said coach Diane Kirnie, recalling what she said to console her heartbroken players.

"They've got a taste of what it's like to be here. I told them that. We'll be back bigger and stronger next year, more experienced, and that's going to help.''

Sophomore point guard Fenyn scored 23 points for the Lady Reds including 14 in the first half as Newark held a 31-28 halftime edge.

Teammate Shakista Woolfolk added 19 points in the loss. Newark was dominated on the boards being rebounded by a whopping 41-16 edge including 24-6 in the second half. Newark failed to score in the final three minutes of play 19 seconds after Fenyn's lay up gave Newark a 54-49 lead the largest margin for either team on the night.

Newark's fine season ends at 25-1 on the year. Fenyn was named to the state all tournament team with teammate Jackie Loson being presented with the sportsmanship award.
