Cabaret Night in Newark

A highlight of spring, Newark High School's annual Cabaret Night will be held this Saturday, May 5.

Dave Schwind, Newark school district music supervisor and instrumental music teacher at NHS, who directs the NHS Jazz Ensemble, said this year's event promises to be another great, relaxing evening of entertainment.

The upbeat event is held each year in the school's gymnasium that is transformed for the evening to create a nightclub-like atmosphere with decorations, tables with tablecloths and candlelight. A stage is set up, on which members of the Vocal Jazz Ensemble, directed by NHS vocal music teacher Jean Bendix and members of the Jazz Ensemble, directed by Schwind, perform two musical sets each. Other NHS student musicians act as waiters and waitresses, serving gourmet desserts like New York -style cheesecake, carrot cake, homemade fruit pies, chocolate cake and beverages.

Proceeds from the evening support music scholarships given at graduation to two students who plan to pursue careers in music.

Because seating is limited, it is recommended persons who would like to attend purchase reserve seating in advance at either the Newark Village Pharmacy, Flowers Unlimited, Community Bank or at the main office at Newark High School. The price of admission, that includes beverages and dessert, is $10 for adults and $5 for students and for senior citizens with a Gold Card.

Doors will open for the 6:30 p.m. event at 5:30 p.m.
