With all of the nice weather and lots of sunshine, we really are anxious to get our flowers, before everyone else gets the ones we want. If you want to plant, you will have to wait a couple of weeks for annuals. Plants like pansies, violas and primrose are pretty and can be planted now for color. Perennials can be started and cold crops like broccoli. If you get your tomato and pepper plants, you can set them outside during the day to enjoy the sunshine then remember to bring them in at night when the temps go lower again. Soon, around the end of May, you can take them out and leave them out, but, for right now, if you want them to live for the warm weather you have to protect them from the cold.

May 5 - June 2: Community Breakfast

Sodus United Methodist church (Main St. Sodus Village) will prepare an 'all-you-can-eat' breakfast for the Community the first Saturday of May (May 5) and of June (June 2). Breakfast will be served from 7 a.m. until 10 a.m. in the church fellowship hall. There will be Spring flower activities for the children at the May breakfast (planting seeds, decorating flower pots, activities, etc.). Price is $4.95 for an adult; $2.95 for children 12 and under, and a family price of $14.95. Pancakes, scrambled eggs, sausage, oatmeal (optional raisins and brown sugar), toast, homemade muffins, coffee, milk and juice will be served buffet-style.

Greenhouses in your area: just to name a couple. (The Apple Shed will reopen in June.)

  • DeFisher's Greenhouses, 7241 Ridge Road, Sodus
  • Grandpa's Nursery & Gardens, Inc., 6720 Rotterdam Road, Sodus
  • Burnap's Farm Market, Corner Lake Road & Maple Ave., Sodus

Offering homegrown fruits, vegetables, lunches, flowers, ice cream and so much more. Pick your own fruits available in season. Open Memorial Day through Halloween.

I remember Burnap's having great baked things as well.

Another fun project to do with your family is to get a big pot, fill it with potting soil, get some our your favorite smelling herbs. Every time the kids walk past the the plants, they can rub the leaves and enjoy the smells. And you can enjoy the convenience of herbs being so close to the stove.

Did everyone have a Happy May Day? And Cinco De Mayo is tomorrow (Saturday the 5th). Would be fun to try out those Mexican recipes or even have tacos.

There are a lot of events planned to celebrate mom's day. Just to remind you, Mother's Day is May 13.

Enjoy your weekend and time you spend with your family.
