Community Pride Day in Newark

Newark Village officials are be inviting teams of volunteers to clean up the community Saturday, May 12.

Events will include picking up litter from 9 to 2 and refreshments following in the T. Spencer Knight Park, north bank of the Erie Canal, along VanBuren Street.

Lee Mikewicz, Newark Economic Development Director, is coordinating Community Pride Day. He's asking folks to clean up their own front yards, sidewalks, and gather debris on the streets near their homes.

He's looking for volunteers from Civic groups, Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts, to name a few. North Side Neighborhood Alliance will clean parts of the village. Alliance Chairman Tom Furfaro said they'll be setting up a drop-off site where people can bring items such as swing sets and above-ground pools, for a $10-per-person fee.

Wal-Mart has signed on as a sponsor with a $1000 donation from its community grant program.

To become part of Community Pride Day, phone Mikewicz at 331.4770.
