The Potteries of Lyons The next History at Night at the County Museum in Lyons will be Thursday, May 17 at 7 p.m. The topic will be The Potteries of Lyons by Ross Marshall. In 1825, the Master Potter of Athens, NY financed the construction of the first pottery in Lyons, to coincide with the opening of the Erie Canal. Some 80 years later, the last pottery closed in 1905. Now Lyons Pottery is coveted. Last year at auction, an N. Clark & Co. Lyons, five-gallon butter churn with original dasher guide and a deep cobalt standing deer design with a pine tree behind sold for $11,000. And this year, an 1830 10-inch N. CLARK, & Co LYONS two-gallon jar with a folksy open-hand design sold at auction for $8500. Join Ross Marshall for this in-depth discussion revealing the people, reasons, art and stories about this important chapter in Lyons history. Marshall is one of the few people able to answer the question: 'How is Benjamin Franklin like a water witch?' After Marshall's presentation, go upstairs to see the new Lyons Pottery and Clyde Glass Room in the museum.
