Red Creek takes 1st at Envirothon The Wayne County Soil and Water Conservation District congratulates Red Creek High School in taking first place for Wayne County at the Central NY Regional Envirothon competition held in late April at the Rogers Environmental Educational Center (DEC) near Sherburne, NY. The Envirothon is an environmental competition sponsored by New York's Soil & Water Conservation Districts. The team members were Spencer Bills, Jesse Cramer, Benjamin Dates, Desiree Matthews, Nicholas Schwartz and Team Advisor, Terry Elmer. A total of 53 teams from Wayne, Cayuga, Onondaga, Chenango, and Madison Counties competed. The Envirothon is a unique hands-on approach to environmental education that tests the students knowledge in five subjects: soils, aquatics, wildlife, forestry, and current environmental issues. The team from Red Creek will now go on to compete at the New York State Envirothon to be held at SUNY Cobleskill on May 23 and 24. The winner from New York will then go on to the Canon Envirothon Competition being held at Hobart William Smith Colleges, Geneva, New York. The Regional Envirothon Committee would like to thank the following Wayne County sponsors: Wegmans of Newark, Waste Management, S.C.O.P.E. of Wayne County, Lyons Veterinary Clinic, Marshall Farms, Dynalec Corp., Rochester Gas & Electric, Lyons National Bank, Galens Inc., Alton Hardware, Motts, and Empire Fruit Growers. Any school, business or individual who would like more information on the event or wish to make a donation is encouraged to contact the Wayne County Soil and Water Conservation District (SWCD) at 315.946.4136.
