May 4, 1917 - There was a large attendance last Saturday afternoon at the raising of the Honor Flag at the corner of Main and Buffalo Streets. The flag was presented to the Town for its promptness in raising the allotment in the Third Liberty Loan Drive. Veteran of '61 has places of honor on the platform. The program consisted of a drill and music given by school children and Scouts with an address by H.A. Robinson. United Church of Marion will hold a Chicken & Biscuits dinner on May 21 from 4:30 p.m. until gone at 3848 N. Main St. The dinner will feature home-baked pies. Take-outs will be available. Hunneybear's Market & Garden Center will hold their open house on May 19 from 9 to 5 and on May 20 from 10 to 5. Door prizes and donuts & refreshments (while supplies last). May 18, 1944 - The old Newark High School is ready for prisoners of war. Although the quota of German prisoners may be short, they will bring in Italian prisoners to the site. 68 men from the District have been called for the draft. Even though the District was told to call up all men under 26, except farmers and preachers, they have depleted their list and are now calling up those over 26 years old unless they are in essential war work. Jeanne Lewis of Port Gibson Travelers is offering a motorcoach trip to the Gaither Homecoming 'Give It Away Tour 2007' at the Blue Cross Arena on Saturday, October 20, at 6 p.m. Cost is $66 per person. Motorcoach departs at 4:30 p.m. from Newark Community Center parking lot, use the East Avenue entrance. Arrive by 4:15 p.m. for loading.
