WWI lectures continue in Lyons In the second session of Lyons Civic Clubs spring literary series, The Lamps Went Out in Europe: World War One - That Seminal Catastrophe, lecturer/researcher Victor Harris will continue his examination of World War I, the 4-year struggle that consumed the globe and claimed millions of lives, by reviewing A Farewell to Arms. The May 29 lecture begins at noon, at the Lyons Community Center, on 9 Manhattan Street Extension. A Farewell to Arms is a semi-autobiographical novel written by Ernest Hemingway in 1929. The novel tells the story of Lieutenant Frederic Henry, a young American ambulance driver serving in the Italian army during World War I. Henry falls in love with the British voluntary aid detachment Catherine Barkley and their relationship develops. The couple's romance is forced to end abruptly when Henry has to return to the front. A Farewell to Arms is an excellent example of the writing style that made Hemingway famous. The series, sponsored by the Robert G. Boehmler Community Foundation, is free and open to the public. Registration is required. For more information or to register, call Sharon at 946.3367. Copyright
