In October, Matthew Colacino was officially awarded the rank of Eagle Scout. Colacino has been a member of Newark Boy Scout Troop 138 for seven years. In June 2006 he completed his Eagle Scout project by leading his fellow scouts and volunteer adults as they cleared and landscaped a section of the canal off of VanBuren Street. He is currently a full time student at Monroe Community College working toward a degree in Criminal Justice. Attending the Eagle Scout ceremony were troop members and leaders, family and friends, Mayor Peter Blandino and his wife Helen, Assemblyman Robert Oaks and Superintendent of Newark Schools, Henry Hann. Letters of commendation from Assemblyman Oaks, Superintendent Hann, Senator Michael Nozollio and Bishop Matthew Clark were read. Recently, a letter of congratulations from was sent from President George Bush and Laura Bush to Colacino. Long-time friend and Eagle Scout Jonathon Shanley was the master of ceremony. Eagle Scout Blake Stewart and Life Scout William Guchone did readings and several troop members participated in the ceremony. Scoutmaster Robert Hegeman confirmed that Colacino had met all of the requirements of Eagle Scout.
Colacino recognized his parents, James and Roberta Colacino for their support as he worked through the ranks of scouting. They each received a pin. He also gave a special Mentor pin to Rose Mary Guchone who has been a leader in his troop for many years. Copyright
