Workshops offered at Cooperative Extension

Many appliances around your house use small amounts of electricity even though they are turned off. The easiest way to eliminate these phantom losses is to unplug the devices. You can plug several items into a power strip and turn the strip off.

Cornell Cooperative Extension will offer free workshops with other energy-saving techniques, ideas and resources: Thursday, Nov. 15 or Wednesday, Dec. 5 from 9-11 a.m. All workshops are held at the Cooperative Extension offices on Rt. 88N in Newark.

Free energy-saving tools provided to each participant, but registration is required. Call Sue at 331.8415.

Unplug Personal Digital Assistants (PDAs) and cell phone chargers when you are not using them.

Some devices such as your TV, DVD player or VCR are not practical to unplug regularly. But if they are not being used for an extended period, unplug them or connect them to a power strip and turn the strip off.

According to the World Wildlife Federation, turning off your computer monitor at the end of the day keeps about 950 pounds of carbon dioxide out of the atmosphere every year.

Here are more energy-saving tips:

  • Night time is the right time to use your washer and dryer.
  • Turn off lights not in use.
  • Reach for the Energy Star when shopping for appliances.
  • Energy-efficient compact fluorescent bulbs (CFLs) use 75% less electricity than incandescent bulbs.
