On November 11, there was a flagpole dedication ceremony followed by the raising of the flag at the Wayne County Nursing Home. School Specialty, Inc. donated a 30-foot flagpole and a flag to the Wayne County Nursing Home Foundation last fall. This donation was obtained through the efforts of Jack McCranels. The Foundation began fundraising for the Flagpole Project shortly after receiving the flagpole and flag. The project involved building a retaining wall and adding a railing for safety and putting in a patio with plantings surrounding the patio area. Margaret T. Haroff, Administrator of the Wayne County Nursing Home, thanked the Foundation for their work in making the Flagpole Project a success. She welcomed Chaplain James P. Jaeger, Lieutenant Colonial, Air National Guard who did the Invocation. Jim Hoffman of Williamson, Chairman of the Wayne County Board of Supervisors, spoke; Senator Michael Nozzolio presented the Nursing Home with a NYS Flag on behalf of Assemblyman Bob Oaks and himself. After Chaplain Jaeger dedicated the flagpole to the Veterans living at the County Nursing Home, he blessed the flagpole. The flag was presented to Haroff by Peter Stirpe, Master Sgt., U.S. Army Retired, and member of the Foundations Board of Directors. Haroff accepted the flag on behalf of the Home's veterans and all of the residents. Boy Scout Troop 96 of Palmyra performed the flag-raising ceremony and led everyone in the Pledge of Allegiance. The Clyde Saxton Band, Marion Red Caps and Lyons High School Bands played the Star-Spangled Banner. Lyons VFW Post 6778 and the James R. Hickey Post #120 followed with a 21 gun salute. The Bands then played Echo Taps. Deacon Joe Mack, a World War II Veteran who served in the five major battles, blessed the flag. The ceremony closed with a benediction by Deacon James Fitch, Chaplain. Folks at the ceremony were invited to enjoy coffee, cider and cookies in the Canal Pub. Copyright
