kelsey thoms Kelsey Thoms signs letter of intent for Marist

When Newark senior Kelsey Thoms began playing goalie in the Modified Lacrosse program, she found a passion for the position of goalie.

That passion has now earned her the right to play at the Division I level, with Marist College in Poughkeepsie.

Thoms signed her letter of intent on November 16.

Her former coach Jane VanHee said, 'I have never before found an athlete in the girls lacrosse program who wanted to play goalie and had such a passion for the position. Kelsey constantly worked hard at it and it showed.'

'When I looked at all the colleges, Marist seemed to be the best fit for me both academically and athletically,' said Kelsey.

School Athletic Director Greg Herbst said Kelsey's hard work did not go unnoticed.

'It's nice to see a multiple-sport athlete excel in one sport and continue on with that sport at the next level. What separates Kelsey from others is that she a good athlete and - better yet - a good student athlete,' said Herbst.

Kelsey thanked Coaches Jack Fisher, Sue Moak, Jane VanHee, Regina Hill, Doug Rowe, Lionel Brown and Jen Felber for their support during the last five years. 'Their support and faith in me allowed me to have this opportunity,' she added.

Marist College, recognized for excellence by U.S. News & World Report, TIME Magazine and the Princeton Review, and by Barron's Best Buys in College Education, is noted for its leadership in the use of technology to enhance the teaching and learning process.

Founded in 1929, Marist's 150-acre campus overlooks the Hudson River in the heart of the historic Hudson Valley, midway between New York City and Albany.
