Wayne County 4-H is home to a group of kids excelling in the rabbit project area. The Wayne County Rabbit Decathlon Team is a group of youth who meet year-round at the Wayne County 4-H Office. These are kids who are currently competing at the county and state levels in 4-H and open competitions. They are being groomed to compete in national competitions sponsored by the American Rabbit Breeders Association.

The volunteer coach of the team is Derek Poole of Sodus. Poole is a nationally-recognized breeder of English Lop rabbits. He was part of the Wayne County 4-H program as a child and this is his way of giving back to the program.

The decathlon contest at the State Fair has ten stations dealing with all facets of owning, raising, and showing domestic rabbits. There are several science-based stations, including Anatomy and Physiology, Reproduction, and Diseases. Business Management is covered at the Project Record Book Station. Knowledge about breeds is tested at the Breed ID, Showmanship and Standard of Perfection tables.

At the 2007 New York State Fair, Wayne County had two teams compete. The Novice Team, whose members were all competing for the first time, was made up of Payten DeWolf, Ontario; Emma Strickland, Ontario; Andrew Schibley, Waterloo; and Charles Hardin, Seneca Falls. There was much excitement when it was announced that the team was second place in the entire state. The top ten individuals in this division were announced and Charles Hardin received 8th place while Andrew Schibley placed 5th. The Junior Team consisted of three members competing for the second year. The members are James Williams, Marion; Jonathan Coyle, Macedon; and Amanda Grevell, Williamson. Leaders and parents are proud to announce that this group of kids placed 4th in the state with Grevell placing 6th individually.

Another state level contest available to youth is sponsored by the New York State Rabbit and Cavy Breeders Association. This contest features a written test, breed ID, and showmanship. The winners of the different age levels are crowned as NYS Rabbit Royalty. Competing from Wayne county this year were Jonathan and Marie Coyle of Macedon. Jonathan finished as the runner-up Rabbit Prince. He placed second in both breed ID and showmanship portions of the contest. Marie was the top winner in her age group and is the NYS Rabbit Princess for 2007-2008.

To learn how a rabbit show is put on, the group is planning a 4-H Rabbit Show on November 3 at the Wayne County 4-H Office. The public is invited to stop in to observe the show, enjoy refreshments, and bid on silent auction items.

Cheryl Eng-Link, a licensed rabbit judge from Canandaigua, is giving an educational presentation on wool breeds and fiber after the judging of animals concludes, at about 2 p.m.

This is a phenomenal group of Wayne County 4-Hers who are extremely dedicated to this project area. For more information on 4-H, a part of Cornell Cooperative Extension - 331.8415.
