Sodus VIM team plans return to Mississippi

Three years after Hurricane Katrina, there is still much to do in Mississippi. A Sodus Volunteer in Mission team is planning their third trip to Camp Hope in Vancleave, Mississippi.

Because of increased interest in this mission work, there will be two teams going in 2008: one team of 25 volunteers will go from Jan. 5 to 12; a second team of 20 volunteers will go from Jan. 12 to 19. Team one will be co-lead by Roy McCarthy and Sandy Hall; Team two will be headed up by Al Walker and Sandy Hall.

Each team member agrees to cover the expense for transportation to and from Mississippi - some fly and others drive.

Volunteers go to assigned sites daily and work on dry walling, flooring, roofing, electrical, plumbing whatever the group is skilled at and assigned to work on.

Local members this year include Roy McCarthy; Sandy, Bill and Katie Hall; Al and Diane Walker; Paul and Mary Ann Riker; Chris Hoot; Betsy and Gene Wahl; Marie DeWispelaere; Marcia Perry; Sara Eden, Hazel Baker; Tyler Baker, Brian and Dylan Thiel; Bud and Jill Beckens; Anne Burley.

There are still a few spots open on these teams.

Needed are people skilled in building trades as each sub team needs a skilled leader on each of the work sites.

If you are interested, call today: Sandy Hall (483.8029) or Roy McCarthy (585.734.8876).

The teams will be hosting a Chicken Barbecue at the Sodus Methodist Church on Saturday, October 20 from 11 to 1 (presale tickets advised limited number of walk-ins call Sandy Hall at 483.8029); they will also have a table at the Sodus Point United Methodist Church Holiday Bazaar and Lunch on Nov. 17.

These fund-raisers will allow the teams to donate money for building materials to the Mississippi Disaster Relief Program.
