OWWL libraries getting server upgrade next week On October 24, 25 and 26, many Pioneer Library System OWWL libraries will be closed due to a server upgrade for the OWWL catalog at Pioneer Library System headquarters in Canandaigua. During the upgrade, library users will not be able to connect to the OWWL catalog via owwl.org to place holds or check their accounts. Wi-fi service and access to full text databases will also be unavailable, as these services interact with OWWL borrower card files. Many area libraries will spend this down-time catching up on in-house cleaning and maintenance tasks, as well as sending staff to specialized training workshops conducted at the Pioneer Library System office. The upgrade will result in cost containment for Pioneer Library System and its OWWL members. The current OWWL catalog runs on a proprietary computer server platform. By moving to an established open-source platform, Pioneer and its members will be able to save money in server support, operating and equipment costs. These libraries will be closed:
These libraries will be open during the upgrade: Newark Public Library will be open with limited services including manual circulation. No wi-fi, OWWL catalog or patron account access, or OWWL holds will be available. Ontario Public Library and Williamson Free Public Library will also be open with limited services, but with no circulation of materials.
