Congratulations to Don and Sandy Hendricks on the occasion of their 40th Wedding Anniversary.

One of last week's Birds Eye Soccer Players of the Week is Nicole DeFisher, senior defender, who was instrumental in victories over Gananda and Lyons. Congratulations Nicole!

A retirement open house is planned at the Witherden Road home of Chuck and June VerPlank, Oct. 27 (Saturday) from 3:30 to 7.

A big group of folks, from around Wayne County, traveled to the Blue Cross Arena in Rochester, to attend the Gaither Homecoming on October 21.

A cure for crickets: One hedge apple (osage orange) in the garage and one in the basement will discourage crickets when they become a nuisance in the fall. The osage orange is an ornamental moraceous tree with fruit resembling an orange with warts. They're native to Arkansas, and thrive in surrounding areas. They also grow in Indiana. The tree is often used to form decorative hedges or fence rows, hence the more common name, hedge apples. (I know where they grow in Pittsford, Waterloo and East Palmyra.)

October 16, 1941: The Homemaking A Class of the Marion Central School entertained the faculty last Wednesday. Girls taking part were Margaret Brandt, Doris VerPlank, Marie Furner, Jeannette Allaart, Irene Ford, Erma Schutt, Elsie Hermenet, and Beatrice Mellema.

Pumpkin Theology

A woman recently became a Christian and was asked to describe what It was like. She said, 'it's like being a pumpkin: God picks you out, brings you in and cleans you off. Then he opens you up and scoops out al the seeds of doubt, hate, greed, etc. Then he carves you a new smiling face and puts His light inside of you to shine for all the world to see.'

Birds Eye Foods Section IV Soccer Players of the Week. Jacob Byron of Marion is a senior defender whose hard work and communications was instrumental in Marion's 3-0 win over North Rose-Wolcott.

Last week I presented a program for the Senior Citizens Group in Waterloo. I was invited for lunch and was surprised to be served mashed potatoes, green beans and liver!

The first flavored potato chips were produced in the late 1940's. Guess what flavor they were: Barbecue, Sour Cream and Onion was next.

The PTA Halloween party, Friday, October 26 at 6 to 8 p.m. in the Elementary Gymnasium. Children must be accompanied by an adult. Please bring a canned good to be donated to the food pantry.

THANKS ... to Tim and Shirley Leno who have contributed an early sign that once designated the 'Marion Post Office' in downtown Marion.

As usual, my Christmas cactus will be in full bloom for Halloween.

CONGRATULATIONS to Gordon and Nancy Van Hall on the occasion of their 48th Wedding Anniversary celebration on October 31.

'Middle age is that difficult period between adolescence and retirement when we have to take of yourself.'
