Happenings It's official. Paul Dingman, son of Clark and Helen Dingman of Marion, is going 'back to school' full-time to earn a doctorate in history. He had worked several years in the field of information technology but, after much consideration, left his regular day job for this new venture. Acknowledging that it was a 'bit of a risk,' Paul took classes at the master's level in 2006-07 and was very happy to learn he had been accepted into the graduate history program at the University of Rochester as a fully-funded Ph.D. student starting in the fall of 2007. Earning a doctorate usually takes four to six years, but Paul is eager to get going. His main area of concentration will be Medieval Europe with a minor in Modern Europe. Thanks! to Vinny, Tom and Jeff who have been such a big help in handling the heavy work at Jennie's House. (I've been known to bribe them with lunch treats). We appreciated the phone call from Elmer and Violet Overslaw from their home in Texas. They are well and keeping busy. (A nice surprise!) Gary and Judy Cleveringa are out from their home in Orange City, Iowa, visiting her sister, Shirley and Roy Tack and other family members and friends. Friday, September 14, the first Roast Beef Supper at the Legion Home on Witherden Road. Art Freeman is home and might enjoy a card in the mail. 1926 - Work on Paving Main Street has a Good Start - The heavy rain of Monday and Tuesday delayed progress on Main Street paving. A beginning was made Monday morning in spreading concrete, near the north end of the paved section, but nothing more could be done until Wednesday forenoon, owing to the effects of rain. Half of the north section of the Palmyra-Marion road is completed and all of the south half is finished. Owing to the road being closed at both ends of Main Street, a detour is made to Palmyra village. A temporary road cuts through the railroad property, connecting North Main and Buffalo Streets. September 13, 1934 - The faculty of Marion Consolidated School, with the members of the Board of Education as guests of the faculty, enjoyed a picnic at Crescent Beach in Pultneyville Thursday. Enjoy the 'Fall Festival' on Sept. 8. Take time to visit the Marion Museum and Jennie's House with the baked goods & white elephant sale. Habitat for Humanity of Wayne County Bike-A-Thon, tomorrow, September 8. I invite you to participate in the 16th annual Habitat for Humanity Bike-a-Thon by cycling the 12-mile family canal ride or the more strenuous 45-mile ride to Canandaigua Lake. We are riding to raise funds to continue building affordable homes in Wayne County for those in need. Financial sponsors are appreciated - Phil Klingler, ride coordinator. 597.3543. Copyright
