Canal Street, Lyons, was closed yesterday from William St. to Geneva St. (Route 14) while this historic building was demolished. Area businesses remained open to foot traffic.

Spectators watched from Canal St. and from the Municipal parking lot in the rear of the building, where heavy equipment literally 'clawed' the structure to the ground.

The building was damaged by fire several years ago, and was then abandoned by owners. When it was determined that the building was unsafe and possibly could crumble onto passersby, the adjacent alley was closed to foot traffic. With the alley closed, anyone who parked in the lot behind, had to walk to Geneva Street to get onto Canal - a hindrance to many business owners and their patrons.

For years, Village officials have struggled with red tape and cost issues, trying to save the building. The conclusion to raze it helped prompt the village to adopt a new law that will, in the future, protect certain historic buildings.
