Missing Sodus At this stage of the moving game, I am surprised I can even spell my own name. It's coming together but will we have our sanity again when we are moved in. (I'm wondering.) This move is so different - not just packing, registering for the new school, appointments every single day. It's beginning to feel the same as when you have no money. Every where you go, people want some and you look at them like, 'From where?' In this case, it's get time and energy. 'From where?!' And of course when you are looking for boxes they are scarce. Again, 'From where?' We will be fine and in a month and all of this will be a fleeting memory, I hope. It's windy again today. The weatherman was surprisingly accurate with the predication of the severe thunderstorm. I hurried outside to batten down the hatches. (You'd think I'd anchor things down or just not put things that will take off out there, but I do.) I got drenched in the process. The dog downstairs was acting up because the storm was coming so I knew to get moving. (Being raised in the country, I pay attention to the animals during a storm. Now, if they could tell us what kind of winter we're going to have.) Seems like I was just taking a peek at the Sodus Library Blog for the events calendar and completely missed the month, but on September 17 and 24, there will be Preschool Story Hour, 10:30-11:30 a.m. One of the first things we found in our new town was the library. (I'm still trying to find my bank.) Sign up now for the first Books-Sandwiched-In of the Fall season. 'Rose Lady' Audrey Ferris will present 'Roses for Every Garden' at noon on Tuesday, September 18. A $3 charge covers your sandwich, a beverage, and dessert. Reservations are required, with the luncheon charge collected the day of the program. Please call or stop by the Library as soon as possible, as Audrey's presentations sell out quickly! There's a chicken barbecue tomorrow at the Williamson United Methodist Church on E. Main, 4:30 - 6 p.m. Take-outs only. Don't forget the fun music at the Cracker Box Palace Music Fest this Sunday from noon 'til 7. There should be everyone's favorites and you might find a new one you like. You can follow the music to 6450 Shaker Rd. in Alton and they have signs in case you have your windows closed. Pultneyville is having their community garage sale this weekend on Saturday the l5th from 9-5. I have never attended because there are so many people, but go early and enjoy the farmers' market, the sales, flea market, lots of food - a nice way to spend the day. Monday night there is Girl Scout registration at the Williamson Library from 6:30 to 8 p.m. At the Williamson Library on Wednesday, September 19, there will be a 7 p.m. program by Eileen Loveman. A columnist for the Sun & Record (Sodus & Williamson), Loveman will talk about her new children's book, george & bob stories. Also on Wednesday is a free Yoga class at the Pultneyville Reformed Church, 6-7:30 p.m. A fun idea for your little ones' lunch - surprise them with a shaped sandwich. When you are making your lunches, take a cookie cutter and make a fun pumpkin or apple sandwich shape for fall, Christmas tree for Christmas time or a bell. Use a cutter big enough so they have a good-sized sandwich. When my kids were little, I would make them the shaped sandwiches and they loved them. But since they didn't 'like' lunch, I most generally got the cute shaped sandwich right back. Kids are funny, though. You stand in the store choosing clothes for school, look them right in the eye and asking, 'Will you wear it? or will it sit in the closet.' They swear up and down they will and they don't. You find it in the back of the closet and when you suggest they wear it, there is some kind of problem with it. Lunches are the same thing. Take them into the store, come up with all kinds of ideas. 'Yes, I will eat it.' And it comes right back. It gets easier when they are older. There are other battles to be fought and won. Raising kids is like surfing - you just kind of roll with it. In the meantime, have fun making those cute little shaped sandwiches. Now that everyone is back to school, it's harder to get time to spend with them. They are gone all day and have homework for what seems like all night. While the weather is still nice, encourage them to go for a walk with you after dinner. It gives them time to relax and to talk with you about the day. Also plan with them some storytime on a Saturday afternoon and let them help you at the library choose the books. Then for Saturday nights, pick a movie for after dinner. It's fun to chose theme nights - have something Mexican for dinner and watch a Dora movie; tropical night with strawberry slushies and travel DVDs. (Don't forget the little toothpick umbrellas.) Have a great week and enjoy each other's company. If you are in Newark, wave to Ralph and Betty Everdyke as they are packing up the car. When the weather starts to get cooler, they are like the birds migrating toward the south. Can't say I blame them. I would go, but have no where to live when I get there, and I am not moving again!
