Historic Nugget: April 11, 1823, Wayne County was separated from Ontario County to become an independent municipality. Instead of 15 towns as it is today, only eight towns existed at that time.

Sodus was established in 1789, shortly after Oliver Phelps and Nathaniel Gorham purchased about six million acres from Massachusetts. The Phelps and Gorham purchase started the series of events that led to the settlement of Western New York by non-Native Americans.
