Mathews family reunion in Iowa

On September 15, in Danville, Des Moines County, Iowa, the 125th Herman Mathews's family reunion was held in the Community Center. Approximately 70 family members of the Herman and Ann Lester Mathews family were in attendance.

There is a 126th Herman Mathews family reunion planned for next year in September.

Debra Mehaffy-Koch submitted the information about the event.

Herman Mathews was a resident of the Wolcott area from 1810 to around 1830 and is listed in the 1830 census of Butler, Wayne County, New York. Herman was the son of Jesse and Abiah Bradley Mathews.

Herman was one of at least six children born to Jesse and Abiah. Older sister, Matilda Mathews Woodruff, followed Herman to Des Moines County, Iowa and died there on February 11, 1873.

There were four younger siblings, Amanda and Royal stayed in Wolcott; Augustus B. went to Wexford County, Michigan; and Lawson died in Butler.

Herman and Ann Mathews left New York and headed west after 1830. Herman was an engineer on the Erie Canal. They ended up in Monroe County, Michigan. Herman then left there with a wife and four sons and headed for Iowa and was in the 1840 census of Lee County, Iowa.

From there he made his home in the Danville, Des Moines County, Iowa area. Herman and Ann were the parents of eleven children, losing one in infancy.

The descendants of their children, Francis, Jesse, David, Henry Clay, Mary Ann, and Lizzie were in attendance at the 125th reunion. Herman and Ann also were the parents of Edward, Charles, Hiriam Smith, Bradley and Herman.
