Newark 1957 classmates gather for reunion

Members of the Newark High School Class of 1957 recently gathered to celebrate their 50-year Class Reunion.

They came by plane, automobile, and motor home from Oregon, California, Nevada, Arizona, Colorado, and Texas; from Michigan, Florida, North Carolina, Rhode Island, Pennsylvania, and New York.

They met Friday at the Elks Lodge and again Saturday night for dinner at Burnham's Canalside Restaurant. Some class members had brunch on Sunday at Burnham's.

Sixty-one classmates along with spouses and significant others attended the weekend festivities. Also in attendance were four guests and former teachers: Ray and Jean Hill, Christine Robarge, and Helen Combes. Donald Carr, class president now residing in Oregon, was emcee for the dinner event.

Sandra Ornt Betts from Palmyra gave the invocation and read the names of 24 deceased classmates. Old and new photos and news articles were displayed along with a special tribute for our deceased members. School colors of maroon and gray were proudly displayed throughout the dining room including the beautiful centerpieces created by Peggy VanCamp Meyers of Newark and Arizona.

Each classmate and guest received a booklet compiled from the questionnaires and a specially engraved pocket calendar. Saturday morning, a Golf Scramble was held at Taranwould in Newark. Prizes were handed out after dinner by Mary Jo Severson Fenyn.

Some classmates visited the Arcadia Historical Society Museum.

Music was provided for dancing and listening by Francis, Lee, and Chaffee.

The next reunion will be planned for 2012. Members of the 2007 reunion committee were Dorothy Cauwels Bosje, Suzanne DeMeyers Kline, Helen Garrett Krebbeks, Duane Lynn, Robert Sapp, Mary Jo Severson Fenyn, Margaret VanCamp Meyers, and Theresa Vigliarolo Volpe.
