The Wayne County Diabetes Coalition is planning exhibits and educational information on diabetic care, nutrition, and cardiac disease. The focus of the health fair is to give people with diabetes and their families the tools to stay in good health. Last year's health fair featured more than 30 exhibits and a cooking show that attracted more than 300 people. Sponsored by Wegmans, Newark-Wayne Community Hospital, and Cornell Cooperative Extension of Wayne County, the event is free with pre-registration. Register today by calling 331.8415, ext. 101. Without pre-registration, attendees will be charged $5 at the door. The keynote speaker is Martha Mosher, Supervising Pharmacist, from Rite Aid who will be speaking on Diabetes and Sex. Diabetes can have a debilitating effect on sexual functioning and this session focuses on the realities of living with diabetes and what couples can expect and what they can do to lessen diabetes impact of their relationships. The Food Showcase will also feature Cooking Demonstrations focusing on delicious and healthy eating. The Cooking Demonstration will be provided by Sandy Betts, Meal Coordinator for the Newark Wegmans store. She'll demonstrates different cooking methods and the preparation of recipes from Wegmans Menu magazine. Diabetes is a disease in which the body does not produce or properly use insulin, the hormone needed to convert sugar, starches and other foods into energy for the body. Science knows that genetics play a large role in the cause of diabetes, and that environmental factors such as obesity and lack of exercise also can lead to the development of diabetes. Some 18 million Americans have been diagnosed with the disease, but approximately 5.9 million more don't even know they have it. Wayne County is estimated to have about 7000 diabetics and these numbers continue to increase. The Wayne County Diabetes Coalition is comprised of Wayne County Rural Health Network, Wayne County Public Health, Cornell Cooperative Extension of Wayne County, Newark-Wayne Community Hospital, DeMay Living Center, and the Monroe Plan.
