CSX train derails outside of Palmyra The Sheriff's Office reports the derailment of a CSX train carrying coal, early Thursday, in the Town of Palmyra. Atop a bed of coal, work crews hook up a train car, to get ready to remove it from the scene. (Photo by Rikki Van Camp, Messenger Post Newspapers).
The train was eastbound near Division St., east of Maple Ave., headed to Fort Drum with coal for their power plant. Twenty of the 85 rail cars derailed, causing severe damage to the tracks and spilling coal. Each car was carrying 100,000 pounds of coal. The preliminary cause is determined to be a faulty axle. The train was not carrying any hazardous materials and there were no injuries. Four million lbs. of coal were either spilled or being unloaded, so the cars could be put back on tracks. More than four years ago, another derailment involving a hazardous material took place near this location. CSX personnel responded to the accident scene to do a full investigation.
