United Way helps Red Cross
The old hotel was badly damaged and is not fit for habitation. The Wayne County Chapter of the American Red Cross responded to the fire by assisting victims with temporary and transitional shelter needs, food, clothing, medications, counseling, and incidentals. 'This was the largest single disaster incident we've responded to so far this year,' said James Love, Executive Director of the American Red Cross. 'Without the support of the United Way we would not have been able to provide the kind of assistance necessary to help these fire victims.' Red Cross has had difficulty raising funds this year to support programs like the local disaster relief program. 'I would like to urge all Wayne County residents and businesses to support the United Way during this years campaign,' said Dave Carr, Volunteer Red Cross Disaster Chairman. The United Way not only funds the American Red Cross, but it also supports the human services programs for 21 Wayne County agencies. Mike Calarco, United Way of Wayne County Board President, said, 'Providing funding to our community partners for human needs services, like the American Red Cross, is a big part of what the United Way does throughout the year.' The United Way Campaign runs through May 9. 'The challenge going forward is to continue to reach out to people who do not run a workplace campaign,' said Carol Pettis, Regional Director for United Way. 'We need more people and businesses to help us reach our goal.' To learn more, call 331.2773 or visit www.uwwaynecounty.org
