Focused attention will be given to providing free breast cancer screening and diagnostic services to medically underserved women with no insurance.

The 2008-09 STEP grants for Screening, Treatment, Education and Prevention, have been awarded to a diverse group of 22 non-profit health care organizations, public health agencies and community groups in the amount of $466,866. These funds will be used to further the Komen mission to eradicate breast cancer as a life-threatening disease by advancing research, education, screening and treatment.

With this grant, the Newark Hospital and the Cancer Screening Partnership will provide breast health information to thousands of women through doctors offices, health fairs, libraries, churches and community events. Short said the funds will also be instrumental in providing free mammograms and breast exams, and will increase education and services to the medically underserved.

This is the 15th year the CNY Affiliate has awarded community grants in the 17 counties they serve, bringing the total to over $3.5 million. In the past seven years, $132,000 has been awarded to Wayne County.

This year, grantee organizations offer services such as free mammograms and diagnostic screenings, education programs for early detection of breast cancer, resources for those who are diagnosed with breast cancer, and support to breast cancer survivors.

CNY Komen for the Cure Affiliate grant funds were raised through individual and corporate contributions and the annual Komen CNY Race for the Cure, which will be held this year on May 17th at the NYS Fairgrounds in Syracuse. It is anticipated that over 8000 participants will help raise $800,000.

Up to 75% of the net proceeds remain in Central New York and a minimum of 25% is dedicated to the Komen Foundation Award, and Research Grant Program which is used solely for non-duplicative breast cancer research.
