Bird guide features Wayne County Shoreline The Edge Walker's Guide to Lake Ontario Birding Hot Spots released by Whiskey Hill Press is the first of what author Susan Peterson Gateley plans to be a series of publications describing and celebrating different aspects of Lake Ontario's unique culture and natural history. The 20-page guide lists a dozen parks and public lands along the lake shore between Webster and Oswego that offer good opportunities for year around bird watching. It also contains a concise summary of seasonal highlights for shore line bird watching and brief descriptions of four bird observatories and conservation areas of national renown along the lake. The spring migration period is one of the best for lake shore birding. Gateley launched the Edge Walker's series after she realized much of the lake's wild coast colorful local land marks and historical sites of the shore and bays were being lost to an increasingly homogenized landscape of waterfront condos and cookie cutter mini-mansions. Both Lake Ontario's cultural heritage and natural habitat are being obliterated by clear cut forests and spacious close cut lawns as historic commercial waterfronts and undeveloped shorelines vanish under an onslaught of gentrification. As undeveloped shoreline gives way to residences, important staging and resting areas for spring migrant birds are being destroyed. More than a quarter of our North American birds are now listed as being species of conservation concern. Much of the decline is due to loss of habitat. Gateley's first Edge Walker's Guide for Lake Ontario Beach Combing described the geology and land forms of the south shore between Pultneyville and Sackets Harbor. She plans additional guides to shoreline historical sites, land marks and other points of interest. She has produced a half dozen books on the lake. Some are based on her experiences sailing the lake as a charter captain, single hander and naturalist. The pamphlet is on sale at gift shops and businesses between Williamson and Oswego and can be ordered online at Copyright
