Law Day will be May 1 in Wayne County

On May 1, through the combined efforts of the Wayne County Judges and Court Clerks' Offices, the Wayne County Bar Association, and the Wayne County Sheriff Court Security Unit, over 650 Wayne County elementary, middle and high school students will be celebrating Law Day through participation in mock trials.

Law Day was established by President Dwight D. Eisenhower in 1958 to appreciate 'ideals of equality and justice under law.' Law Day turns 50 this year.

There are two fact patterns for the participants - one for the elementary students and one for high school students. The elementary school fact patter, People v. Jesse Sunderson, involves a student accused of possessing and setting off firecrackers in school.

The high school fact pattern, United States v. Martha Monroe, involves a homicide with a defense of battered woman syndrome. The only adult that will be actively participating in the trials will be the 'Judge.' The students will have the roles of attorneys, defendants, witnesses, clerks, court security officers and jurors. Each group of students will have an adult 'advisor' for their respective roles in the Court Room.

The following schools will be participating in Law Day:

Lyons Elementary, Palmyra Elementary, N.R. Kelley in Newark, Newark Middle School, Lyons High School, Clyde-Savannah High School, Sodus High School, Pal-Mac High School
