'La Clinica' opens at Myers Health Center Wayne County Rural Health Network, Newark eye doctor Chester Scerra, and the Finger Lakes Migrant Health Care Project, have formed a coalition to enable the use of a retina camera to detect diabetic retinopathy for Latinos. This is a major cause of blindness in people with the disease. In the U.S., diabetes is responsible for eight percent of legal blindness, making it the leading cause of new cases of blindness in adults 20-74 years of age. Each year between 12,000 and 24,000 lose their sight because of diabetes. Emilie Sisson, Coordinator of the Wayne County Rural Health Network said, 'We are grateful to have received a grant from the NYS Office of Minority Health to purchase a digital camera set-up to take pictures of patients retinas. It is also a great tool to help make an initial diagnosis of diabetes.' Mary Zelazny, of the Finger Lakes Migrant Health Project said, 'We look forward to collaborating with Wayne County Rural Health Network and Dr. Scerra. Our patients will benefit from these expanded services.' This grant will increase access to retinal screening for Latinos who present themselves to 'La Clinica' at Myers Health Center, Suite 2100, Middle Road in Sodus. The procedure will be provided free of charge to Latinos as determined by the content of the grant.
